How to Get Here

Travel

The islands of Madeira and Porto Santo can be reached by air or sea. There are two airports: Madeira International Airport – on Madeira, and Porto Santo Airport, on Porto Santo Island. Because the ports of Funchal and Porto Santo are frequently visited by cruise ships, they serve as gateways to the Islands as well as departure points for other destinations. Connections between the islands are by air or by ferry, which also transport cars. Surface transport on the islands is hassle-free thanks to the modern road structure, which has been significantly improved in recent years. Virtually all points on these islands are served by a good road and transport network.

TAP PORTUGAL, the official Portuguese airline, operates from different destinations around the world. TAP is a Star Alliance Member.

In addition to TAP, they have a large number of Charters from all over Europe, and some Low Cost Carriers (Easy Jet, Ryanair, Transavia, Sterling, etc).
“Finally, it is important to mention SATA (https://www.azoresairlines.pt/en) that operates regular flights to the USA and Canada (with direct flights on some days). The list of airlines and destinations is available here: https://www.aeroportomadeira.pt/en/fnc/flights-destinations/airlines/airlines-and-destinations.”

How to get there

Visitors from the European Union, members of the Schengen Treaty, have unrestricted entry. Visitors from member states that are not signatories to this treaty need an identification document. International visitors must have a valid passport and, in some cases, a visa may be required to visit Portugal. There is no need for any type of vaccination.

Customs formalities

Products leaving the Island are not subject to any limitation. However, if an amount is deemed excessive, customs officials may require a document proving that the items are for personal use.

Transport

The transfer time from Madeira International Airport to the City Center, where the Main Hotels are located, is around 30 minutes by bus.

In Madeira there is no Uber, only Bolt and taxis (www.taxinmadeira.com and www.taxismadeira.com) . For airport transfers, you can use these networks or the AEROBUS (about 35 min), which costs €5 to the city centre. In the urban area of the city there is a bus network www.horariosdofunchal.pt, which works very well and reaches all areas of the city with connections to the main tourist attractions on the island.
